Flag in Country Club Hills

Country Club Hills residents raised an 80 – by – 50 foot flag today at Community Park at 175th Street and Pulaski Road, near the intersection of I-80 and I-57. Mayor Dwight Welch proclaimed the flag the largest municipal flag in the country. He says the flag weighs 225 pounds, close to 600 pounds when it’s wet and up to 800 pounds with snow and ice. “But it’s not about the size, it’s about the flag,” he says. A memorial dedicated to volunteers who have served Country Club Hills since 1958 will be built around the flag in the coming year, Welch adds. Country Club Hills is about 23 miles south of the Loop.
