I have a soft spot in my heart for ugly building contests. The first issue of my first real estate publication, launched in May of 1987, nominated the above building (Google Street View photo) in the 1900 block of Halsted Street as the Ugliest Townhome in Chicago and invited reader submissions.
The article resulted in my first reader-response phone call – from the developer’s attorney, who threatened to initiate a process that would result in his client’s owning everything I owned. In my usual friendly fashion I told the attorney to inform his client that his only upside was to find an uglier townhome and win the contest prize (dinner for two), and that his downside was that I’d print everything I knew about his client. That was the last I heard from Matanky Realty Group.
