Chicago moves up to 5th in sustainability rank

The couple of million square feet of green roofs Chicago has created in recent years didn’t help any, but the city still rose to 5th in a ranking of 50 major cities for sustainability by Sustain Lane. Chicago rose from 8th place last year.

The city ranked first for its “knowledge base” (sustainability plan and partnerships with universities and others) and 2nd for regional public transportation, according to a story in the Chicago Sun-Times. In one major category, though, Chicago finishes 45th: air quality. Building condos with green roofs is great, but maybe we should go after belching power plants instead of chocolate factories if we want to get to number one.
