Chicago rent barometer: apartments for under $1,000

If you want to live someplace like the Gold Coast, that $1,000 isn’t going to get you much. The Homestead Group is renting studios on the corner of La Salle and Maple with a price range of $975 to well over $1,000 a month. Why anyone would want to pay $1,000 dollars to sleep next to their dining room table is beyond us. Hasn’t the #151 bus already lost its title as the love bus?

If you’re willing to move north but still want to maintain your cool you can find some nice one-bedrooms in Lake View and Lincoln Park that will fit within your budget. Check out the floorplan (at right) for this one-bedroom at 2140 Lincoln Park West, which is currently available for $995 a month. There’s also a fitness center in the basement, though this may be because it’s hard to move around much in an apartment this size.

Move further north or south and you can maintain your proximity to the lake and pick up plenty of space. Both Rogers Park and Hyde Park offer a number of two-bedrooms for just under $1,000. Check out the two-bedroom at 1125 W Farwell Ave (available for $930, pictured at left) and the two-bedroom at 1008 E Hyde Park Blvd (available for $975) to get you started.

If you don’t give a hoot about either the lake or location, you can score a three-bedroom apartment in Humboldt Park at 3453 W North Ave for as cheap as $850 a month. Just make sure the advertised “skylit bathroom” doesn’t mean there’s a hole in the roof.
