Chicago rent barometer: apartments for under $600

What can $600 get you these days in the Windy City? About 400 hot dogs or 30 days in one of these apartments, depending on where your priorities lie.

2517 W Fullerton Ave$510 will rent you a studio apartment in Logan Square at 2517 W Fullerton Ave, though the building seems to have eligibility requirements based on income. The floor plan (picture at right) doesn’t look too inventive, though they did get creative by including every measurement they possibly could in the meager space. Weren’t you dying to know the diameter of the circle formed by holding your arms out and making a complete turn in the bathroom?

For $550 in rent you can live by the lake in Edgewater, though this patch of Winthrop isn’t our favorite for late-night solo walks. The studio at 6308 N Winthrop Ave does look pretty spacious, though, with ample closets and hardwood floors as an added lure.

Sneaking in under our limit, the studio at 3616 N Pine Grove Ave in Lake View will cost you $590 a month. Considering the location and the price tag (and the lack of floor plans on the building’s Web site) we can’t imagine this being much larger than a shoebox, but location is nothing to sneer at in Chicago, especially when stumbling home drunk from one of the many bars in this area.
