Chicago rent barometer: the elusive five-bedroom apartment

We’re always fascinated when we find a listing for a five-bedroom simplex or duplex apartment. When most renters pass the four-bedroom barrier they’re forced into a single-family house or townhouse by the simple lack of apartments capable of handling a live-in crowd. But let’s say we and four of our nearest and dearest are looking for an apartment in Chicago. What’s available right now and for how much? Check out what we found.

3920 N Janssen AveLooking at Wrigleyville? The five-bedroom three-bathroom apartment at 3920 N Janssen Ave is currently on the market for $2,900 a month. Not bad for this neighborhood, especially considering the amenities: dishwasher, central air-conditioning, in-unit laundry, two fireplaces, hardwood floors, balcony and deck. Five bedrooms in Wrigleyville? We smell party.

At Hamilton and Argyle in Lincoln Square you can pick up a five-bedroom two-bathroom (eek!) first-floor apartment with a full finished basement for only $1,800 a month. With the low bathroom to bedroom ratio, though, we wonder if some of the “bedrooms” may have started out as something else (a closet perhaps? or a den?).

The folks at 6503 S Kenwood Ave are offering a five-bedroom three-bathroom duplex that does have some beautiful interior shots (follow the link for photos) and the price feels right at only $2,200 a month. But the ad stresses its Hyde Park location a bit too much for our taste. Last we checked, 65th Street and Kenwood Avenue was actually Woodlawn (and why mention the remote control for the garage door? Is the location really that bad?).
