Chicago rent barometer: what's new in the West Loop

CaptionIf you’re looking to rent in the West Loop, there’s a good chance you’ll be living in someone else’s condo, since the majority of the neighborhood’s apartment stock was wiped out and Greektown was beautified in preparation for the 1996 Democratic Convention.
However, there are exceptions: this zero-bedroom 1.5-bath true loft at 221 S Racine Ave definitely ain’t no condo. For $1,550, the unit offers a whopping 2,000 square feet, along with hardwood floors, exposed brick, a front yard and a balcony. Laundry is in the buildng, and a CTA Blue Line station and I-90/94 are two blocks away.

This $1,900 two-bedroom two-bath condo near Monroe Street and Racine Avenue has never been lived in. The kitchen features cherry cabinets, stainless steel appliances and granite counters. You probably won’t hear your room mate at night, since the bedrooms are at opposite ends of the unit. Pictures in a Craigslist ad show big windows, an expanse of hardwood floors and exposed ductwork. Like most condos for rent in the West Loop, this one has an in-unit washer and dryer. The rent includes one garage parking space.

For $1,950, you can get this two-bedroom two-bath condo near Madison Street and Morgan Avenue. It’s got the standard condo features: hardwood floors, granite counters, a kitchen island, marble baths and a balcony. Although the ad doesn’t say so, I’ve been in this building and I happen to know it has a rooftop deck.
