Lathrop Homes redevelopment plan calls for LEED-certified "sustainable community"

The CHA will redevelop the Lathrop Homes site at Damen and Diversey avenues using new US Green Building Council plan for sustainable communities, according to a media release issued yesterday.

The redevelopment plan, which calls for the conversion of the 35-acre, 27-building complex into a mix of new and rehabbed low-income, affordable, and market-rate homes, will follow new LEED for Neighborhood Development guidelines, which call for both the use of green building methods and the use of development dollars to boost job training, community involvement, and “livability.”

CHA CEO Lewis Jordan calls the approach “a virtual culmination of all we have done and learned” in the 10 years of the authority’s Plan for Transformation.

CHA has started accepting letters of qualifications from developers who want to participate in the redevelopment. Responses are due by March 8, after which time the next stage of planning (whatever that may be) will commence.
