Macy’s Christmas windows – weep for Marshall Field’s

For generations of Chicagoans Christmas wasn’t complete without a visit to Marshall Field’s Christmas windows, lunch at the Walnut Room and ice cream delights at the Crystal Palace.

The windows were magical creations, lovingly crafted confections embodying the richness of human imagination and the supreme skills of many an artisan.

The Field’s windows, as best I can recall, began their decline in the late 80s. Macy’s, it seems, has taken them to new lows. “Cheaping out” and “lame” were the words that came to mind as I walked past them.
