Neighborhoods for the rest of us — Washington Park

Broken Arrow Horseback Riding Club, Washington Park

You’re going to move to Washington Park for one of two reasons: you’re feeling lucky, or you’re having some hard luck.

Washington Park, on Chicago’s south side, encompasses the area from 63rd St north to 51st St, and Washington Park and King Dr (400 E) west to the Dan Ryan Expy.

The neighborhood has a number of pluses, starting with Washington Park itself. Transportation is outstanding: easy access to the Dan Ryan, and a short walk to an El stop. Hyde Park and the University of Chicago are just across the park — and a world away. The housing stock, at least that part of it that wasn’t burned out or neglected unto death, is beautiful.

Make no mistake, though: this is a gritty place, for the adventurous and the street smart only.
