Special financing offers are the most common, including temporary 3/2/1 buy-downs that take the first-year interest rate on 30-year mortgages below 4%. A number of builders are offering substantial reductions in the price of options.

If you’re shopping for deals, you’ll have to pick up the newspaper. I scanned half a dozen builder and newspaper Web sites and couldn’t find any trace of the special offers that are made in print.
