Only $200K for a new condo… for your car

We thought $60,000 parking spaces in Streeterville, like those at The Fairbanks at Cityfront Plaza, were a tad absurd until we read Liz Pulliam Weston’s article in today’s Money section of MSN.com. Two companies in southern Florida are ushering in a new era of condo-ownership (not to mention one-upmanship among the rich): condos for cars. According to the Associated Press, units at one Fort Lauderdale car-condo community range from $59,000 for a 300-square-foot garage (that would amount to a studio, we guess) to $200,000 for a 1,000-square-foot unit. Of course, like any residential condo community, luxury amenities like concierge service and lounge rooms are also touted. The hotel condo concept spread here from cities in southern Florida and New York — could the car condo survive in Chicago?
