Past and present collide in Bronzeville

We posted recently about the rising value of property in the Bronzeville area. There are deals to be had because the neighborhood is still emerging, according to Tawnya McVicker, an @properties agent representing half a dozen developments in the area. Countless others – both rehabbed buildings and new construction – are underway.

But pockets of the neighborhood are still seedy; others retain a faded grandeur tempered by well-meaning renewal efforts. This greystone mansion, typical of Bronzeville’s housing stock, sits next to a new city park under construction on the southwest corner of King Drive and 47th Street. Construction appeared to be progressing on the park last Saturday, with mounds of dirt and cement pillars filling the site (however, the sign on the fence announced a fall 2006 opening).
