Permit parking annoys some Lake View residents

Permit parking in South Lake View is an ongoing battle

Some Lake View residents say they are being approached to sign petitions to allow permit parking in the area – and they’re not interested.

Residents spoke out against permit parking Tuesday night at the South Lakeview Neighbors June meeting. According to the group’s boundaries, the South Lake View area runs from Diversey Parkway to Belmont Avenue and Ravenswood Avenue to Racine Avenue.

“We are completely surrounded by permit parking neighborhoods,” says Bill Haderlein, recording secretary for the group. “We have been against permit parking since it came about. We feel as American citizens paying for city stickers, we should be able to park anywhere in the city.”

One resident called permit parking “a revenue enhancer for suckers.”

Permit parking is a controversial issue in a lot of neighborhoods. In late May, we posted a story about a proposed plan in the West Loop to include metered parking on some streets and permit parking on others. Business owners in the area told us that parking in the area has become increasingly tough.
