These areas form an immigrant settlement corridor, and a progression that’s been followed, over the years, by both Europeans and Latinos, according to one study (PDF, p. 6):
“European immigrants lived in Pilsen, moved to Little Village, and moved later to Berwyn and Cicero, in a fashion that is very similar to the Latino movement occurring in recent decades.”
Another study suggests that more Latino newcomers are skipping this three-step program, and going directly to Addison for the blue-collar jobs found there (PDF, p. 2):
“Mexican immigrants appear to be skipping the urban immigration process altogether, and bypassing Pilsen and the Back of the Yards neighborhood to settle directly in blue-collar suburbs like Addison.”
