Renaissance Place loft project doesn't shake its hospital history

Click for larger image Sure, part of a loft’s charm is the history of the building, but there are few memories we’d rather not live in, no matter the rehab inside (former jail and former crematorium immediately spring to mind). But what about a former hospital?

From the large circular driveway, two-wing structure, and glass-box entrance, Renaissance Place, 5200 S Ellis Ave in Hyde Park, is still every bit as hospital-esque as when it was the working osteopathic hospital. Even the cheery balconies that overlook the main entrance couldn’t shake that feeling – we kept waiting for a gall bladder patient to come tottering onto the landing in his open-backed hospital gown.

Available two-bedroom two-bathroom lofts at Renaissance Place are priced from the $220s.
