Chicago rent barometer: newly converted University Station

Exterior, University Station: 1550 S Blue Island Ave

Over the last month, the lofts at University Station have been deemed “habitable” by the City of Chicago. With the number of recent loft-conversions and new-construction condos in University Village over the last couple of years, we thought we might be able to find a unit for rent. For $1,850 per month, plus one month’s security deposit, you can be the first to live in this two-bedroom, two-bathroom concrete loft. This unit features more than $11,000 in upgrades as well as a private balcony that measures 117 square feet.

The rent includes one parking space, free heat and basic cable. The building includes a 24-hour doorman, common party and exercise rooms, and a roof deck.

While the rent seems slightly high for the area, the 1,336 square feet of living space and the “rent-to-own” option might make it worth investigating.
