See a historic building, buy someone else's junk at condo association garage sale

This weekend, the Randolph Place condo association is holding a “garage” sale in the alley behind the building, located at 165 N Canal St in the Fulton River District. Poking around an alley and rifling through someone’s trash may not sound like any way to spend a weekend, but architecture buffs may want to check it out because the building was built in the early 1920s by Chicago city planner Daniel Burnham‘s firm – Graham, Anderson, Probst & White.

The 16-story building fills an entire city block and, according to MCZ Development, was the largest residential conversion in the country when it was conceived. The conversion was completed in the late 90s, and Randolph Place now has 341 loft condos and 100,000 square feet of commercial space, which means you can always stop at Nine for a $40 steak if you can’t find anything at the garage sale. The sale runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the Randolph Place loading dock.
