Signage – a step in the right direction?

Walking along North Ave and Pulaski Rd last summer – and wondering what happened to the Duks on the corner – I was struck by the notion that a lot of objectives could be advanced if the city had a sign ordinance that required use of the English language.

The suburban Village of Niles recently adopted an ordinance requiring that commercial signage be predominantly in English, and has begun enforcing it.

It’s one small step in helping immigrants integrate into the US, and one powerful message that neighborhoods don’t belong to any ethnic group.
