Still room for renters, small businesses in Edgewater

6100 block, Winthrop Ave

Lakefront Realty Group‘s Marion Volini, whom we recently spoke with about the importance of homeownership in making Edgewater one of the city’s most stable communities, doesn’t foresee the neighborhood’s renters — myself included — getting booted out anytime soon. Again, she points to the diversity of the housing stock, including the abundant and relatively affordable rental buildings along Winthrop and Kenmore avenues, where we focused a lot of attention earlier this week.

“Newer, fresher people coming into the rental market always adds to the vitality of the community,” Volini said, “and I think that’s a vital element to keeping a neighborhood young and looking forward.” Volini cited the numerous block clubs, community participation by its people, wide variety of newcomers moving in from other countries and strong loyalty to local merchants as other contributors to the neighborhood’s freshness. Fewer franchises and more entrepreneurs keep things unique and exciting, she said. “Every time I turn around I see something new opening on Broadway,” and Volini sees that action feeding into arterial streets like Granville Avenue.
