The strange world beyond Chicago – a townhome in the woods

Residents of inner-city neighborhoods like The Loop often tell us that they moved downtown because they decided that if they were going to live in the city, they might as well live in the city.

But apparently the opposite doesn’t apply. The suburbs were created for people who wanted to be able to afford a large home and provide their kids with a nice big backyard. So what’s with all these lofts and tiny condos that are popping up everywhere all over the suburbs, often priced not much lower than what you would pay in Chicago?

The development that really made us chortle? Jacobs Homes’ Chelsey Crossing, in the village of Gurnee in Lake County, where you can buy a townhome that is “buried in the woods.” True.

You can try to tell us that people elect to live in townhomes in suburban areas because it’s more affordable and there is less maintenance involved, but we still think it sounds silly…
