Through a glass, lightly

I’ve scoured Yo’s Wicker Park Week / fortnight rather diligently for any evidence that Wicker Park is not an all-white upper-middle class enclave. You can do your own scan, but I’m hard-pressed to find much.

I’ll grant that change has been rapid in the last half dozen years, but as of the 2000 Census, white non-hispanics, tract-by-tract, made up only between 33.6 and 59.8 percent of the population of Wicker Park. Tract-by-tract between 15 and 20% of the population of Wicker Park lived below the poverty line — and many of them were not starving artists.

Wicker Park’s glass is half full of yuppies — but it’s not empty of the rest of us.
