Venture Statuary, one of Uptown‘s strangest and most wonderful businesses, has closed its doors. A “for rent” sign now occupies its shop window at 5040 N Clark St, along with the memorable neon slogan, “For the person who has everything, say it with concrete.” The store sold every possible variation of concrete fountain, gargoyle or garden gnome. It was still open a few days after Christmas, when I walked through its crowded aisles with my visiting family. My dad had his wallet out, ready to make a hefty purchase, when he realized what it would cost to ship these concrete treasures to the East Coast.
