Wilmette teardown tax on new homes postponed

401 Sunset Wilmette

At its meeting last night, the Wilmette Village Board tabled a proposed “teardown tax” that would levy $12,000 for each home demolished to fund affordable housing in the North Shore suburb. A vote on the issue has been rescheduled for the next meeting, on Sept. 26.

Pictured above is 401 Sunset Drive, which joined 410, 425 and 437 Sunset in Wilmette’s teardown parade, as a demolition permit request was filed early this summer. You can see a slew of Wilmette teardowns at YoWilmette, and debate the issue in our City hall hell forum.
