Wilmette votes tonight on teardown tax to fund affordable housing

The Wilmette Village Board will vote tonight on a proposed “teardown tax” that would levy $12,000 for each home demolished to fund affordable housing in the North Shore suburb. YoJoe has made his feelings clear, calling the tax “goofy,” but we’d love to hear what you think. Is this a good faith effort that will help create sorely needed affordable housing in an area of rapidly rising prices or a silly bandaid that will hurt development and home values without really alleviating the problem?
