A tire with wings floats above a window of the Center on Halsted, set to open later this year as a social service and community center for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered communities. The center includes a mix of old and new architectural elements: the facade of the 1920s building (originally a two-story garage) was removed and placed on top of a new building that will house a theater, a gym and a roof garden, among other facilities. A Whole Foods will anchor the project, currently under construction at 3656 N Halsted.
