Hyde Park project Silver Cloud evokes art deco period

Meet Silver Cloud Condominiums, or at least a disappointing rendering of what promises to be an interesting conversion of a gorgeous building. Creative Designs Builders’ new project is a conversion of an old apartment building (vintage unclear) at 5346 S. Cornell Ave., into a 72-unit development, where two-bedroom units are priced from the $230s to the $430s.

Help us out – we don’t have a proper picture of this building and we’re trying to determine its architectural influences. The developer says it was built around 1910 or 1915 – or perhaps in the early 1920s. It’s brick, with limestone detailing around the arched windows and terra cotta cherubic reliefs on the facade.

The developer describes the building as “art deco.” We’re not so sure about that, but at least Creative Designs Builders has some interesting ideas on how to create an art deco-feel. The developer plans to built a steel fence with a gate that features a grill, in a nod to the Rolls-Royce, while the development is named after the car company’s famous (1950s) Silver Cloud model.

Continuing the art deco flourishes, the lobby will have a round desk for the doorman, brushed-glass doors that lead to the fitness room and a movie room called the Silver Screen.

Anyone got any thoughts on how to characterize the building architecturally?
