Don't rely on city to ensure quality of construction on your new house or condo

A little piece of paper sure goes a long way. In the September issue of New Homes Magazine, home inspector and columnist Tom Corbett reminds new homebuyers just how important that building permit posted outside a construction site is. In his line of work, Corbett too frequently finds buildings that are worked on without permits posted, and broken arms, exploding water heaters and thousands of dollars in repairs can ensue.

Buyers excited about their new homes are sometimes willing to overlook what can seem like minor sloppiness, but if they consider the potential long-term safety and repair costs of shoddy work, they’ll understand why they have to be vigilant in the vacuum left by loose city oversight of new construction.
