Finkl closing is bad news for second-tier neighborhoods

It seems like only yesterday — because it was yesterday — that we were suggesting that A. Finkl & Sons’ acquisition of a south side site would result in the closing of its Clybourn Corridor plant and mark the beginning of the end of the Clybourn Corridor Planned Manufacturing District (PMD).

Today, Crain’s Chicago Business is reporting that Finkl has been acquired by a German firm, and will be shutting down its 22-acre Clylbourn Corridor location.

It’s going to take a while, but the PMD will become a footnote in history. The amount of development that will then take place along the Chicago River from North Ave to Webster will provide tough, perhaps killer competition for second-tier neighborhoods such as Bucktown and Wicker Park.
