Last week’s North Side building permits

If you’re in the market for a newly-built home or condo you’ve probably noted that many of the new projects are sold out prior to completion and often prior to their being listed in the MLS.

The City of Chicago makes building permit data available online on a fairly timely basis. Monitoring permits can be a way get an edge on other buyers, and perhaps negotiate a more favorable price, by reaching out to the builder (who may refer you to a broker) as soon as a permit is issued.

All permits issued since 2006 are online in a single dataset. The easiest way to see only recent new construction permits is to click on the column headings to sort the data by descending (most recent) date, then filter on permit type to see only new construction. Finally, click on the Menu icon to download the sorted, filtered data in the format you prefer.

The following residential permits were issued for North Side new construction between September 6th and September 12th:

The building permit dataset includes contractor names. We’ll leave it to you to access the data and source out the contact info. It’s a task you’ll need to perform if you want to monitor the permit info on an ongoing basis.
