Neighborhoods for the rest of us — Wildwood

A typical Wildwood streetscape

It wouldn’t be surprising if more Chicagoans have been to Wildwood, New Jersey than to its namesake neighborhood on the city’s far northwest side. Unless you know someone who lives in Wildwood, or work for a landscaping or home improvement company, there’s not much reason to visit this verdant residential enclave.

Wildwood is one of the micro-neighborhoods in Forest Glen, one of the city’s official community areas. It’s bounded roughly by Devon Ave (6400 N) to Estes Ave (7100 N), and Lehigh Ave west to Caldwell Ave.

If you do visit, you’ll be impressed by the calm and overwhelmed by the greenery, which is dense enough to darken most streets at noon on a sunny day. The largely post-war housing stock is varied and almost uniformly pleasing to the eye.
