Pile drivers take a rest during Sheffield construction

Victorian house

Ah, hear that? Silence. Sweet, pure, peaceful silence. Well, not quite pure. There’s the sound of a cement mixer churning and of workers shouting, and regularly, of the beep-beep-beep of a truck backing up, but compared to the earth-shattering beat of the pile driver we’ve been suffering through (think footsteps from King Kong or Jurassic Park) for weeks now, this is a great respite. If the new construction on the 3100 block of N Sheffield Ave has been bad for the YoChicago staff, what’s it like for the residents of this lonely Victorian, flanked on both sides by the new-construction projects that have been testing even our formidable powers of concentration?

The city has seen massive amounts of new construction during the last decade, and residents in various neighborhoods have put up with everything from damaged foundations to diminished parking because of ongoing development. Send us your stories, and we’ll send you our sympathy.
