"Smart home" coming to 1445 West Thomas

1445 W Thomas St in Noble Square, ChicagoListings for the new six-unit condo building at 1445 W Thomas St in Noble Square invite buyers to “control your lights, heat / air, sound, appliances etc via the Web anywhere in the world.”

The only other place I’ve encountered similar “smart home” technology was at the Museum of Science and Industry‘s Smart Home: Green + Wired exhibit. There, the technology enabled people to monitor their energy usage to reduce carbon emissions, but in the case of 1445 West Thomas, it appears to be added just for the sake of convenience.

It could be a handy way of managing your utilities, but I’ve never had the desire while traveling to fiddle with the air-conditioning or radio back home. Maybe I’m just a boring guy.

The Funke Architects-designed building is currently under construction, and @properties agent Mike Vesole says deliveries should begin in late spring.

According to the price sheet I received over the weekend, all six of the homes in the development have three bedrooms and two or three bathrooms. Prices start in the $470s for two 1,500 square-foot three-bedroom / two-bath single-floor units, and the four 2,000 to 2,500 square-foot three-bedroom / three-bath duplexes are priced from the $640s to the $740s.
