Trump calls Spire "financial suicide"

Chicago Spire

Yeah, we’re as surprised as you are to hear that Donald Trump, whose Trump Tower sits about a mile away from the site of the proposed Chicago Spire, hasn’t suddenly gotten all warm and fuzzy over the luxury tower since the redesign was unveiled. In a follow-up to yesterday’s big news, the Chicago Tribune today gauged reactions to the project from some prominent Chicago developers. Magellan‘s James Loewenberg called it “a great project if they can pull off the numbers,” but Trump, who has consistently been a vocal critic of the building that seeks to upstage his, branded it “financially impossible.”

We’ve got an interesting conversation going on along those same lines on our previous post. Alan thinks the new, 150-story design– which I think looks like a giant churro— is “completely out of proportion,” but Devyn points out that it is “more economically viable.” And, of course, everyone has his or her own ideas about whether or not Shelbourne Development can manage to sell a whopping 1,300 condos, even to the global super-rich set.
