Historic Chicago bungalow expo turns green

We grew up in the bungalow belt, and in our neighborhood, nabbing one of these solid brick houses was a sign you’d made it. But that was in our neighborhood. Who ever would have guessed yuppies and architecture buffs and professionals of all stripes would begin snapping up and polishing these houses like treasured trophies? The bungalow has become hip, thanks to skyrocketing real estate prices and the Historic Chicago Bungalow Initiative of Mayor Daley, who grew up in a bungalow in our general neck of the woods. The latest sign of the bungalow’s rise in fortunes is the Historic Chicago Bungalow and Green Home Expo, a free event that will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Merchandise Mart. Yes, the bungalow is turning green. Next, watch for the Historic Italian Beef with Sweet Peppers Initiative to put sushi restaurants throughout the North Side in the red.
