Yo’s truly has always had a soft spot for RDM Development‘s 1400 Lake Shore Drive, the handsome old high-rise that was built in 1927 for the Wrigley family and is currently being converted to condos. Yo know what I like best about it (other than the killer views of the lake and the skyline from the rooftop deck? The developer is managing to offer a few mod cons without sacrificing the building’s art deco charms. That’s not as radical an idea as it sounds. As RDM co-founder Robert Mosky put it in a recent interview with New Homes Magazine writer Dan Schuyler: “It is important to remember that while this is a vintage property, the art deco movement was really one of modern design.”

RDM gives buyers the option of upgrading units with its Modern Luxury package of finishes. The package includes sleek European cabinets that echo modern art deco lines, black kitchen appliances (yes! no stainless steel here!), and bathroom tiles and vanities that are sympathetic to the era, yet still forward looking. Even the high-tech fitness center in the basement plays to the grand old building’s strengths. The basement was originally designed with 20-foot ceilings to accommodate massive boilers. That space is being transformed into an ultra-spacious fitness center. RDM is also replacing the roof, electrical and water systems, ventilation systems, plumbing risers and unit electrical service. Units in “as is” condition are priced from the $130s and units furnished with the Modern Luxury package are priced from the $160s.
