4 + 1 x 100 = Edgewater

Four-plus-one

Think there’s homogeneity in condo buildings now? Take a walk up Kenmore and Winthrop avenues in Edgewater and witness the embarrassment of four-plus-one buildings, which have four residential floors atop one floor of parking. Sometimes thought of as the architectural equivalent of syrup of ipecac, four-plus-ones were getting built like gangbusters during the 60s and 70s. Some have withstood the test of time better than others, and, like snowflakes, no two seem to be alike. We’ve seen some four-plus-ones in the city go condo, but, for the most part, these buildings appear to remain part of Edgewater’s rental stock. Check out some of them below, and witness the full onslaught at our Winthrop-Kenmore photo gallery at Flickr.
