A window to a warmer Windy City home

Staring out my window at the driving snow, I’m reminded of New Homes columnist and home inspector Tom Corbett‘s recent advice about selecting the right window to withstand the Chicago winter.

Generally, windows in the Windy City need a protective film that reduces heat transfer, and wooden frames, which conduct less heat than aluminum frames, according to Corbett. Windows with casing (exposed framework or molding that covers the space between the window frame and the wall) shut out the cold air most effectively. He says that the Web site, EfficientWindows.org, can help homebuyers determine which windows are most suitable.
