Chicago rent barometer: Sauganash a haven of single-family homes

Single-family home in Sauganash

The Sauganash neighborhood has long been considered one of Chicago’s finest places to raise a family. It’s generally easier to find a single-family home for rent than an apartment, and rents in the neighborhood tend to be on the high side (perhaps not surprising considering that a Whole Foods recently cropped up on Cicero just north of Peterson). We looked around at rentals in the area and found these three options:

-For $1,000, you can lease this three-bedroom 1.5-bath apartment at Sauganash and Peterson. Although you’re only five minutes from Starbucks or the new Whole Foods, you have to bus it to a Blue Line. What’s more, the apartment has no laundry facilities and pets aren’t allowed. The tenant is responsible for gas and electric.

-For $1,799, you can rent this three-bedroom 1.1-bath single-family home at 6205 N Keystone Ave. The custom-built raised-ranch-style house features an open floor plan with good-sized living and dining rooms. The kitchen has wooden cabinets, Pergo flooring and a built-in oven. The home also features a washer and dryer, and an additional 1,300 square feet of space in the basement. A 1.5-car garage sits just off of the alley.

-For $2,575, you can rent this three-bedroom 1.5-bath single-family home at Knox and Peterson. The kitchen was recently remodeled, and the family room has built-in bookcases. The bathrooms are also remodeled and feature double sinks. This traditional home is situated on a landscaped lot measuring 60 by 130 feet that features a fenced yard, screened-in porch and a stone patio. A washer and dryer and an attached garage are part of the deal, too.
