Do buyers care about hand-made, custom tiles?

Tiles from Unique d'Clay Tiles from Unique d'Clay

When I was visiting open houses this weekend, I stopped by a fairly nondescript three-unit building at 1470 W Ohio St in West Town. The building hadn’t been finished out, and in fact the floors were still cement, but inside I found Jennifer Lea from Koenig & Strey GMAC Real Estate, who was eager to talk about the building.

The condos seemed pretty typical for what you might find in the area. In the four-story building there are three two- to three-bedroom duplexes priced from the $460s to the $590s.

Looking at the finishes on the specs sheet, you find the usual granite and stainless-steel in the kitchen, Kohler and Whirlpool in the bathroom. But as I was on my way out, Lea mentioned one thing that wasn’t on the specs sheet. The developer has a relationship with a nearby business called Unique d’Clay that makes custom tiles, and they regularly use the tiles for fireplaces and backsplashes. The two photos that I’ve pulled from the Unique d’Clay Web site have sort of a disco aesthetic to them, but there are a handful of other styles the company offers.

Perhaps it isn’t enough to convince someone to buy a new condo who otherwise wouldn’t have, but at least the tile offer is a break from the same old tired finishes we see offered at every new-construction condo building.
