Driving through Bucktown and Wicker Park recently, we passed a good sprinkling of modern buildings – including some new homes under construction. We haven’t taken an official tally, but adventurous design appears more common in these neighborhoods than in other parts of the city outside of downtown. While modern architecture isn’t unheard of in Lake View or Lincoln Park, for example, builders in those neighborhoods seem more interested in fitting in (or trying to fit in) with the predominant stock of 19th- and early 20th-century brick buildings.
Bucktown and Wicker Park aren’t immune to that tendency, of course. But at many developments, contemporary design wins the day. New Homes Magazine photographer Jon Randolph recently snapped these photos, of a single-family house under construction at 2018 W Cortland St, a development of five condos at 1927 W Potomac Ave and the mixed-use development Aspen 6, at 1915 N Damen Ave, which according to its Web site has only one unit left.
