Mike Stern, one of our local correspondents in Evanston, suggested that I check out the popular community gardening scene.
Peggy White, a volunteer gardener who lives just up the street, graciously took some of her time to show me around and explain some of the benefits of community gardening. The main benefit (my take) is the sense of community among the gardeners. The more experienced ones are generous with their help to gardening novices. Growing your own food, eating locally and the taste of fresh vegetables are just a bonus.
The City of Evanston administers the program. Fees are modest: $75 for a 200 square foot plot, half that for a 100 foot plot and a few hours of community service.
