Hookers not part of Goldberg's vision for Marina City condos – or were they?

Marina City

“I don’t see buildings being divorced from people inside the buildings or outside the buildings even. Everybody hugs the building in some form. It’s a sensuous kind of experience.” Some residents of Marina City, where a couple of condos are alleged to have been at the heart of a national prostitution ring, might have taken the words of architect Bertrand Goldberg a tad too literally (this sensuous photo, by the way, is from fotoFANATIK at Flickr’s terrific Marina City collection). Then again, Goldberg did want residents to be able to meet virtually all their needs without leaving the complex…Judge for yourself. You can hear more of Bertrand Goldberg and his vision – 320 pages worth, if you have the stamina – in a series of fascinating interviews given as part of the Chicago Architects Oral History Project.
