Marshall Field's: a tour by any other name won't sound as sweet

Photo courtesy of the Chicago Architecture FoundationNow may be a good time to sign up for the Marshall Field’s on State Street walking tour led by the Chicago Architecture Foundation, as there are only four tours left before Marshall Field’s undergoes its name change to Macy’s on State Street, in September. Though the historic corner plaques will still be in place after the name change and there are promises of continued window displays and the Great Tree at Christmas, there will also be a fair bit of renovation and remodeling.

The changes range from the small (replacing the traditional green window awnings with Macy’s black awnings) to the not-so-small (reopening a private elevator directly to the high-end 28 Shop; possible valet parking; opening up the Frango Cafe with a viewing window, so patrons can watch the famous mints being made). Still, any change is significant for Chicagoans lamenting the name change. No reservations are needed for the architectural tour of Marshall Field’s on State Street. Simply show up May 15th at 12:15 p.m. at Entrance number 6.
