Now showing at Evanston Theaters: new condominiums

We’re opposed on principle to replacing vintage movie palaces with condominiums, but in the case of the Evanston Theaters’ (1702 Central St) closing, chronicled in today’s Chicago Tribune, it was hard to see a viable alternative. We can’t help but like the new cineplex to the south that features six art screens as well as a dozen mainstream ones, not to mention a terrific bar with live jazz.

There’s no way that the dilapidated Evanston Theaters, which shut its doors in 2001, could compete. Developer John Crocker wants to replace the old Evanston Theaters with a $20 million condo project, the Tribune reports. Evanston has not approved the project, but Crocker hopes to launch the residential project in 2007.
