Seven rescued from Edgewater apartment building fire

Seven residents were rescued Monday from a fire at a three-story Edgewater apartment building that had only one working smoke detector, according to a story in today’s Chicago Sun-Times. After the Rogers Park fire that killed six children last summer, and given Chicago’s history, shouldn’t the city and state step up penalties for landlords found in violation of the law?

Rogers Park boosters, by the way, frequently complain that the neighborhood gets a worse rap than it deserves because negative events that occur elsewhere are attributed to Rogers Park. That appears to be the case with this incident, which happened in the 6000 block of North Kenmore Avenue – in Edgewater – but was reported as occurring in Rogers Park.
