Sustainable architecture at the MCA

Chicago can’t seem to come up with a workable recycling program, but our buildings are getting greener by the minute. On Saturday the Museum of Contemporary Art highlighted the trend in green design with a sustainable architecture exhibit featuring work by Studio Gang Architects, UrbanLab, Farr Associates, Tigerman McCurry Architects, Gensler, Murphy/Jahn, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The MCA launched the exhibit, titled Sustainable Architecture in Chicago: Works in Progress, in conjunction with Bruce Mau’s Massive Change: The Future of Global Design to expand on the concept of “environmentally responsible and ethical approaches to land use, materials and energy-efficient practices” and provide “specific examples of how such ideas are being applied locally,” according to the museum. All of the works displayed are institutional, commercial or civic buildings scheduled for completion during the next few years with the goal of being aesthetically appealing and environmentally sound. The exhibit runs through Jan. 6, 2007.
