Tales from the rental front: the rent is always cheaper on the other side of the fence

We heard word from a friend in Logan Square recently who decided to move across the street from his current apartment. Why? When it came time to renew the lease, his landlord upped the rent by $100, despite no fewer than 10 “for rent” signs on his block. So he and his wife decided to move from their soon-to-be $1,100 a month two-bedroom apartment with air-conditioning to the $900 a month two-bedroom apartment without air-conditioning across the street. With such a short distance to travel, no moving van was required. They just picked everything up and carried it.

But his story got us thinking: how much would you have to save to be motivated to move your stuff across the street? If there was a near-identical apartment mocking you with its cheaper rent, would you be tempted for $75 a month? $100? $200? At what point is the hassle of packing and moving outweighed by the extra green in your pocket? Click on “Comments” and tell us your price.
