Major condo tower planned for South Loop

yo Lexington.jpgAhh, we love the smell of new construction in the morning. Yo has caught wind of a new development coming to the South Loop all the way from the mossy shores of Ireland. Chieftain Group, based in Limerick, is building Lexington Park Condominiums on a site at East Cermak Road and South Michigan Avenue. The 300-unit development will house one- and two-bedroom condos, some with dens. Prices start in the $200s.

A rendering for the development shows a modern glass high-rise and a mid-rise with loft-style units separated by a low-rise parking structure with a large roof deck above and street-level retail. In terms of style, both the glass tower, with its segmented facade and trellis-like roof element, and the attached parking structure are a little reminiscent of architect Ralph Johnson’s acclaimed Skybridge tower, in the West Loop. You get some interesting angles on the planned building here, at the Chieftan Web site.

The developer has done major projects everywhere from South Africa to Ireland to Budapest, but this appears to be the company’s first U.S. venture. Lexington Park Condominiums is valued at 135 euros. We’ll let you figure what that works out to in dollars, but here’s a hint: the greenback is pretty weak right now.

A sales center, under construction at 2138 S Indiana Ave, is scheduled to open in mid-July, and Chieftain expects construction to begin this fall.
