Update: landmark demolition proposal rejected

With the support of city planners, Prism Development Company expected its plans to demolish the landmark Farwell Building, 664 N Michigan Ave, to be approved yesterday, but, in a move that surprised even the preservation advocates, the Commission on Chicago Landmarks rejected Prism’s proposal. The Chicago Tribune reports on the decision that was reached after two hours of debate. Prism principal Jon Rodgers told the newspaper his company was “completely, tremendously disappointed,” but did not comment on the fate of its plans for a mixed-use development, which includes the 86-unit Ritz-Carlton Residences, on the North Michigan Avenue site.
